Device Tracking for handheld AR?

February 24, 2017 - 7:56am #1

Reading the limited information on Vuforia Device tracking and watching videos such as this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNynNRt2SR8 I am left confused.

My understanding is that this option simply uses a devices gyro input to compensate for rotational movements. If this is the case, why can't device tracking be used for handheld AR experiences? I'm developing for a Samsung Tablet.  Any feedback appreciated!

Device Tracking for handheld AR?

Hello,

To clarify, a gyro and accelerometer IMU are required for the device tracker to work on a device.

The device tracker can be used for handheld AR experiences. The limitation is that it only provides 3DoF poses for rotational motions (pitch, yaw roll), thus cannot determine changes in position due to translation (standing up, sitting down, stepping left, stepping right, etc.). This is the same limitation that all VR headsets experience.

The use of the camera provides the ability for the Vuforia object tracker to provide 6DoF poses. So which technology you use just depends upon your use case.

Thanks, Dave
