Directional Light changes ... with the camera?!?!

September 17, 2012 - 5:24am #1

Hello guys,

so I am developing a standard imagetargets based apps for the iPad2. In a very standard way. My scenes have 6 objects, one for each image target. It happens that when I have many objects in front of the camera, of course the camera recognizes the image tragets and shows the objects but something weird happens with the light. It flickers a bit, changing the direction. (It's a unity3D directional light).

Any suggestion? I'm working witht he VuForia 1.5.9 for Unity3D on the Mac.

Many thanks,

GC.

Directional Light changes ... with the camera?!?!

Ok i finally find the solution, just make the directional light a child of the AR camera :)

Go to the ARCamera, and on the VuforiaBehaviour script it has the World Center Mode. If you have it on First_Target or Specific the world coordinates are based off of the target. That means if your directional light is unparented it will be static with respect to the first target tracked. Having it set to camera or device will mean the coordinates are based off your device and so the unparented light is going to follow you around.

Same thing. If light is parented to nothing, then light is changing with camera for every object. And if it is parented to some target then it is static just for that target, and  moving with the camera for all others.

Did somebody find any solution?

It's all faces, all objects being shown on tracked Image Targets. The light is not flickering it simply seems like it has been rotated to a different angle, I would even say at 180 degrees from what it should be.

I'm also having this exact same problem, Directional light is in scene parented to nothing.

When tracking 4 Image Targets simultaneously the directional light seems to change rotation.

From what I can see this only happens in the Android build, this does not happen when testing through webcam in Unity.

Vuforia 6.0.112 & Unity 5.4.0f3

Please advise.

hi,

can you tell me if you see the problem with the flickering light all over the scene or just on some faces? for what it sounds like i had a similar problem but it was just affecting some meshes.

in my case i solved the problem by using a vertex lit shader instead of a diffuse one. maybe it's the same thing you are experiencing.

best,

stefan

Yes especially if I let the camera to recognize more than an Image target simultaneously ... sometimes (not always) the lights start being funny. Dunno why. Can't really know how to reproduce a simple case....

At the moment I parented the light to the camera, so the camera is parent of the Light, so far.. so good.

Hi giancamati,

So bascially your app has the same structure as ImageTargets, but with 3 more Image Targets to make 6.

...and when you move the device around the light seems to change direction when new Image Targets are recognised?

Not seen this before.  If you can PM me with a simple repro case based on the Image Targets I can try to look at this.

Hi giancamati

Can I ask what the light is parented to in the scene graph?

Do you have one light overall or one light per object per image target?
