Hi,

Is it possible to create an AR app with Unity with Vuforia so that external content can be loaded without going through The App Store or Google Play?

Yes, it would be devise-based content.

Yes, I agree that simply building an apk will suffice.

iOS is the issue:)

Is it possible to build the 'viewer' in Unity for iOS and then download external content, that is, the image Target and 3D Model?

Devise Based approach.

When you develop in Unity, and Build to apk or iOS, the content and viewer are created.

I was hoping to build the 'viewer' so people can download external content, that is, the Image Target and the 3D Model.

Yes you can do that for device-based content.

For Android devices just publish an apk file and copy it to your device.

For iOS it's a bit more complicated, but you basically need to publish for ad-hoc distribution. Only thing is you'll need the identifier (UDID) for each device you want to install it on.

 

If your talking about cloud-based reco though, I'm not so sure.
