iOS 8 Jittering/Shaking

Since updating to iOS 8 we have noticed that the AR in our previous app has become shakey and unstable. It looks as though the 3D models being shown are constantly moving and shaking around.

We have tried rebuilding the app with the newest versions of Unity and Vuforia but we are seeing the same problem.

We have a device that has not been updated to iOS 8 and is running iOS 7. The app runs perfectly on this device.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Ok thanks, changing the camera mode to MODE_OPTIMIZE_SPEED has fixed the issue.

I wish I could provide evidence of the change after updating to iOS 8; the app was not jittering at all before the update and we noticed it as soon as we had updated.

But anyway this seems to have solved the problem for us now, so thank you.

not wanting to hijack the thread, but I have been experience camera/model jitter on a number of different models and target images running on both IOS7 and IOS8.

I have tried the numersous suggested ways to deal with it in the FAQ tips but still get it.

For example I can see in the view the target image is focussed correctly and the model appears, a laptop in this instance, and a video plays on the latop screen and all is working well. 

However with my arms resting on the desk so as not to move the iPad and holding it as near perfectly still as I can the model suffers some jittering about.  I'm finding this to be the case on animated models, non animated models and models with video attached.

Any ideas on how I can clean it up to prevent this?

Thanks for the Video;

in fact, what you see is likely more a difference between the iPad3 and the iPhone 5;  

the fact that the iPad3 is running on iOS8 does not necessarily mean that the cause of the issue is with iOS8.

My educated guess here is that the issue might have something to do with the device rather than with the specific iOS version; you would probably observe the same or very similar results on an iPad3 with iOS7  (unless you have some evidence that on the same iPad device things got worse when upgrading to iOS8)

One thing to be aware of is that the iPad3 uses a HD camera resolution (e.g. 1280 x 720p); this might have a role here.

Have you tried changing the camera mode from MODE_DEFAULT to MODE_OPTIMIZE_SPEED ? This will make Vuforia select a lower camera resolution, which might possibly have some impact .

(You can change the camera mode in the ARCamera inspector)

Thanks for the quick reply,

We have tested on an iPad 3 GSM (iOS 8.0) and on an iPhone 5 CDMA+GSM (iOS 7.1.1).

Obviously we would like to be able to test with 2 of the same device with different OS versions, but we only have 2 devices available, an iPad and an iPhone, so that is not possible for us.

The attached video shows the iPad(iOS 8) and the iPhone(iOS 7.1.1) running the same image targets sample scene, but as you can see the iPad shows the teapot model shaking around sporadically.

The iPad is in a stand so it is perfectly still.

We tried moving the target image around but we still see the same result from all angles.

On both devices there are no other apps running in the background.

We are using Vuforia 3.0.9, Unity Pro 4.5.4 and vuforia samples 3.0.10.

I'm not aware of specific jitter issues related to iOS 8 vs iOS 7;

however, by searching the internet, I've read that certain devices (for example iPhone 4S) might suffer general performance issues when upgrading to iOS 8; I wonder if what you observe might be simply  a consequence of reduced overall performances (e.g. your CPU might be more heavily loaded).

I also wonder if your App is maybe performing other CPU/ GPU-intensive tasks or maybe loading and rendering large 3D models  or similar (beside the use of Vuforia) that might lead to a too heavy CPU load and consequently result in general poor performance (possibly including more noticeable jitter).


What specific device have you tested on iOS 8 ?


Also, can you observe the same issue by running one of the Vuforia Samples and comparing the two iOS versions ?  

A simple test would consist of trying for instance the Image Targets sample and make an iOS7 vs. iOS8 side-by-side comparison.

Ideally, if you then can also make a video and post it here to show the difference, that would help too.
