Scanning a 'generic' marker

May 6, 2013 - 7:31pm #1

Heya,

I'm part of a student team working on an iOS / Andriod AR card game in Unity, with Vufloria. The idea of the game is as follows:

The players have a deck of cards. They play these cards. You bring up the device running the software, it looks at the cards, and says, "oh this card is this type of spaceship and it has this much health, and this other card is a weapon, and this other card is something else".

The problem that our group has run into is that in order to scan a card, to my understanding, we need that card's marker somewhere within the Unity scene.

Unfortunately I'm unable to personally push our code to a device so the debugging / testing of this project is perhpas a bit harder than it would usually be, so I may be about to ask some outstandingly stupid questions. That's my excuse, anyway.

- Is there any way we can set up a way for Vufloria to scan a marker without that marker being in the scene? By, having, say, a geneirc marker that tells unity that it's found a card and it needs to work out what it is by scanning the actual marker (and from there creating models and everything around the card).

- Is there any way we can have duplicate markers scanned, as separate cards? Say if we have one card that is a 'spaceship', if the user has two of these spaceship cards, how are we able to scan both and treat them both separately?

- Is there a better way to manage a card game with vufloria?

Thanks for any potential answers,

- Kritz

Hi Kritz7,

concerning your question about duplicate targets, these are not supported, i.e. you cannot have two identical cards, you need to have some difference between them.

Did you take a look to the user-defined sample ? https://developer.vuforia.com/resources/sample-apps/user-defined-target-sample-app

This sample apps show how to scan an image and use it as an imagetarget.

Hope it will help :/
