Shaking 3D object, nothing stays still - simple demo scene

October 1, 2015 - 9:01am #1

Hi,

We just had a problem with our client because all our project is shaking, the camera can't keep the object still on the tracker.

I've tried to sandbox the problem, so I've downloaded your tracker, followed your tutorial and added a cube as an object.

The cube moves and shake violently, it doesn't remain still and this didn't seem to happen on the previous version of vuforia (I've been using vuforia for years now).

Set up:

- Latest vuforia package

- Unity 5.1.1f1

- Latest version of XCode

- iMac with OSX Yosemite

- iPad Air 2 - IOS 8

Here is a video recording of the problem: https://www.dropbox.com/s/m8o0dchu6u5s4cz/VID_20151001_163113.mp4?dl=0

Here is the Unity scene: https://www.dropbox.com/s/juab0raidkuvgj2/Sandbox_Unity.zip?dl=0

Here is the Xcode project: https://www.dropbox.com/s/2i6tkoo0gofp4tt/Sandbox_Xcode.zip?dl=0

We are currently sending a lot of quotes for new clients for augmented reality projects and we are quite scared of what could happen if the problem isn't solved...

We really need some help!

Thanks a lot in advance,

Kindest Regards,

Boris

When I add those lines:

bool focusModeSet = CameraDevice.Instance.SetFocusMode(
    CameraDevice.FocusMode.FOCUS_MODE_CONTINUOUSAUTO);

if (!focusModeSet) {
    Debug.Log("Failed to set focus mode (unsupported mode).");

The answer I get from the ipad air 2 (in Xcode) is this: Requested Focus mode FOCUS_MODE_CONTINUOUSAUTO.  Not supported on this device.

And the cube is still shaking. The package I've added to my post is a scene ready to export. I've followed the tutorial, added a unity cube as object (instead of the teapot). The error only occurs on the ipads (I haven't tried on iphones) on the iMac the cube is steady. On a galaxy tab S the problem remains, the cube is shaking.

What am I doing wrong ?

The demo with the teapot seems a lot steadier. For my next projects what should I do, import the teapot project and work from there instead of the unitypackage SDK ? Monday I'll go through each project and compare the difference between the sample project and the sandbox I've created following the online tutorial, to spot the difference and try to understand why it's not working with the SDK.

Note: the sample referred to by dm3d (Image Targets sample) makes use of Camera Focus mode CONTINUOUS_AUTO, which may play a role in enhancing tracking stability;

see for more information: https://developer.vuforia.com/library/articles/Solution/Camera-Focus-Modes

I tried with an iPad Air 2 (9.0.2) and the ImageTargets 5.0.5 sample app with and I wasn't able to reproduce the same jitter as seen in your video. Are you able to reproduce with the ImageTargets 5.0.5 sample with the teapot augmentation? Also, does the jitter occur when iPad is at a higher angle in relation to the target?

Hello,

This is a recurrent problem, is there any advise from the Vuforia's team to help us on that one?

Regards,

Boris
