Using SDK without unity, but then telling unity to render

(I am not sure where to post this, as this is actually a question about avoiding use of the unity extension)

There are quite a few limitations to the Vuforia Unity extension. The one that is most pertinent to me is that I can't seem to define arbitrary positions for a multi-target. I think the multi-targets for the Unity extension is limited to a cuboid or a cube. Let's say I wanted to put it on an octagon, or to define more than 6 targets in a multi-target with targets of varying sizes.

This seems quite possible in the SDK, so I was wondering if I could use the SDK to write my own software, then, when I get camera behavior from the SDK, I can just give the transform to Unity's camera and have it render? I want to do it this way because Unity has a much better.

Has anyone tried this? What are the drawbacks?
