Videoplayback on iPhone 3GS

August 25, 2013 - 7:17am #9

Hello guys,

I am having some problems occurring in the the iPhone 3GS with the video sample. When I press the play button, all I can see is a black augmented plane in the scene where it should be being projected the video. The same doesn't occur for iPad 2 and iPod 4 Touch.

Did you change something in the last upgrades of Vuforia that made this to start happen or it may be Unity related?
I don't recall this happening in old versions of Vuforia but I may be doing something wrong. Is this a known problem?

Technical details:
- iPhone 3GS ( iOS 6.1.3 ), iPod 4 Touch ( iOS 6.1 ) and iPad 2 ( iOS 6.1.3 )
- Package Vuforia: vuforia-unity-android-ios-2-6-7
- Package Vuforia-videoplayback: videoplayback-2-6-7
- Unity 4.2.0f4

Thanks for your time. Best Regards,
Joel Oliveira

Does this happen just with your application?

Presumably the Video Playback sample runs fine right?

Hello Nalin,

Thanks for your answer. This happens with my application and with the Video Playback sample.

One more information is that I can hear the video perfectly and this happens with the sample .m4v files and my application .mp4 files.

Thanks for your time. Best Regards,

If it's not working with our VP sample then something must be fundamentally wrong.

..as when I tested the VP sample it on a 3GS device with 4.1.3 it was fine.

What version of iOS do you have on your 3GS?  Is it a jailbroken device?

Also, one thing you could try is running the native sample - let me know how you get on.

Hello Nalin,

As I said in the first post, we are using iOS 6 on every test-device. None of the devices are jailbroken.

For now I'm a bit short on time and I cannot test the native sample on the iPhone 3GS. Maybe at the end of the week.

The problem is that we are heading for our application release this week and we were counting on this to have video working on 3GS. If not possible we'll have to go the fullscreen way in the iPhone device.

Once again thanks for your time. I'll try to post later on this matter as I feel it very strange to be the only one talking about this problem. You get either of the two: 1) No one uses the iPhone3GS for AR-Videoplayback or 2) I am doing something wrong here :)

Best regards,

Joel Oliveira

Well, the samples and the SDK go through an extraordinary amount of testing, including the video playback and it has not shown any problems so far.

So it could possibly be the device you are using.

As I said, I have tested the sample myself on a 3gs (iOS 4.x) and while it is a bit slow it does still work.  It sounds like the video plays fine in fullscreen but not on the texture.

The only other thing I can offer is if you PM me with a link to the app then I can try to reproduce the issue.

Hello Nalin,

Once again thanks for your patience and time on this matter.

I don't think that sending you a link to the app will help in the resolution of this problem since this occurs also on the videoplayback-sample. My app is completely based on that sample.

Although it feels a little bit strange to me, it seems like the problem may be on the device itself, my only problem is that I don't have any other 3GS to test now and I don't have the time to try and do a force downgrade on it to some prior version of iOS. As you said the sample-apps pass a good amount of testing but I would be relieved if you could say if it was tested against later versions of iOS in the iPhone3GS ( like mine: 6.1.3 ).

I don't want to look like a problematic guy, I am just curious with this problem. I'll see how everything goes and if I get new info I'll report it back again to this thread.

Thank you. Best Regards,

Joel Oliveira

I think it is most likely the device itself.

You can have confidence in the Vuforia testing.
