AR Camera and Image Target Orientation

April 30, 2019 - 3:55am #1

What is the best orientation in unity scene to place the image target with respect to AR camera. Is it necessary to put the image target at certain distance and 90 degree rotation? What if we put both AR camera and Image target on (0,0,0) with rotation (0,0,0). Will this make any difference while detecting the image?

My understanding is that there is no connection between the location of the Unity ARCamera in the scene, and the ability of the Vuforia Engine to recognize an Image Target. What matters is the position of the device's camera relative to the target in the real world.

For reliable 2D target detection, the most important factors are:

  • Has been optimized for reliable detection: https://library.vuforia.com/articles/Solution/Optimizing-Target-Detection-and-Tracking-Stability
  • Angle of attack: Image Targets are more difficult to detect as the camera's angle of approach approaches 0 degrees (camera is parallel to the target, rather than perpendicular)
  • Always print the image that was uploaded to the portal to the exact same aspect ratio. Any stretching or altering of the image will cause it not to be detected. Some printers default to "stretch to fit", which can change the aspect ratio.
  • Target is flat
  • Target is not occluded by spectral reflections
