EXC BAD ACCESS Code=1 Crash In Vuforia.Init

November 1, 2018 - 12:41pm #1

Graphics API is OpenGLES_2, so this isn't the Metal crash. When the app has been running for a while or has reset the scene repeatedly, randomly, it will crash with an EXC error inside Vuforia.Init. It only happens when the application is low on memory, but there's usually at least 5-10% total system memory available at the time.

The location of the memory access for the crash isn't consistent and the crash shows up multiple times in Crashlytics as a result. It appears to only happen on devices with 2 GB RAM or less, which supports the memory stress crash theory on our side, and it doesn't appear to affect our Android devices, just iOS. We're also using the -u strip flag to avoid the background crash on application exit.

Is there a fix or workaround for this, or is it an unknown issue? I searched through the forums repeatedly and only found Metal crashes causing this specific issue so far.

Issue appears resolved now that we've done the following:

  • Lowered memory usage to keep system memory at or above 20% available at all times for phones with 2 GB RAM
  • Stopped using VuforiaUnity.DeInit when switching to non-AR content (Camera remained active when setting VuforiaBehavior.enabled to false)

EDIT: Never mind. Crashing again now that we've re-enabled VuMarks in the scene.

EDIT2: Back to not crashing after upgrading to Vuforia 7.5.26.

All of our iOS devices have experienced this crash at one point or other in testing. The ones it's the easiest to reproduce on are the iPhone SE, the iPhone 6, and the iPhone X. Attached are a couple fresh crash reports from Firebase.

Hello,

Can you send us a crash log so we can take a look?

Also, can you be more specific on the types of devices that are experiencing the crash?

Thanks,

Vuforia Engine Support
