How accurate is Vuforia Fusion compared with “pure” ARCore / ARKit?

November 13, 2018 - 8:58am #1

I'm experimenting with Vuforia Fusion to be able to track an object and then use its new extended tracking system (which should use ARCore/ARKit if available) to track the detected object in space.

The problem is, no matter what settings I set, no matter even if I place the .aar ARCore plugin inside the Plugins > Android folder in the Unity editor (as mentioned in the Vuforia guidelines to integrate ARCore), the tracking will always be very inaccurate compared with the ARCore implementation without Vuforia.

I'm wondering if Vuforia Fusion really uses ARCore, because, as I said before, even if I don't put the .aar ARCore plugin inside the Plugins > Android folder, Vuforia Fusion still returns me that I'm using the PLATFORM_SENSOR_FUSION (aka ARCore).

Does anyone experienced the same behaviour? Or did you have different results?

I'm using a Samsung Tab S3 and an S4 one.

Thanks in advance and have a nice day.

Hello,

Appreciate you following-up to clarify the results.

How accurate is Vuforia Fusion compared with “pure” ARCore / ARKit?

Regarding the two curves I posted earlier. Turns out that the S7 is not supported by Vuforia Fusion what resulted in the fall back to Vuforias own tracking solution and that is the reason why the tracking is worse in the bottom/second graph.

fcs1 - You said you are using the Samsung S4? The S7 is the oldest Samsung phone that supports ARCore. So I would not expect good tracking when using the S4.

Nonetheless I also see a clear difference between pure ARCore and Vuforia Fusion tracking. How is this possible and how can I fix it?

.Fig.1: ARCore powered tracking. Phone mounted on a pendulum for consistent movement. Each blue point describes the position of the ARCore camera in. I simply plotted the length of the position vector3.

Fig. 2: Vuforia ARCore powered tracking. Phone mounted to the same pendulum for consistent movement.

Using the same mobile device, our tests are giving a clear advantage to ARCore SDK rather than with Vuforia Fusion enabled.

I solved the .aar plugin problem/question I had, it was my fault because when removing a plugin from Unity it is necessary to reload the software to the change to be applied.

Without the plugin Vuforia Fusion does not detect ARCore.

However the question about the accuracy remains!
