How can I make my Unity app launch in portrait mode for an app designed around portrait orientation?

March 12, 2018 - 11:55am #5

I am making an app which is intended to be in portrait mode but I am unable to get the app to launch in portrait mode through Unity's settings because the Unity Player settings indicates that the app will start in "Landscape Left".

Since my splash image is intended for a portrait display, it appears incorrectly rotated.  We have been rotating it 270 degrees so that it appears upright in Landscape Left mode, but any native level popups (such as asking the user if it's okay for Vuforia to use their camera) appear rotated in landscape mode, ruining the presentation.

I imagine there will be Xcode generated files that I can edit to correct this.

(Apologize if this has already been asked before, I briefly skimmed the forum search results).

Hello jlinden,

You can define your app orientation within Unity under Player Settings -> Resolution and Presentation -> Orientation. Our Core Samples use this to lock to portrait mode.

@jlinden, are you making an VR app?

If thats the case Vuforia overrides the Unity orientation settings and will always launch your app in landscape Left because of the Virtual Reality supported check box you activate under XR settings. A far as I know, there is no way to override this.

@Strasza method apply if you are not making a VR app. In that case Unity Orientation can be changed and it should launch your app in the orientation you just choose.

@Guiara It's not technically a VR app to my understanding of that definition.

It's an app for mobile devices and it's not being rendered in stereoscopic.  Though, I have "Virtual Reality" enabled in order for Unity to import the Vuforia SDK; when this isn't enabled, I get errors in the console pertaining to "Vuforia not being able to be found".  Are you suggesting there's another way?

Hello again jlinden,

Unless you are making a VR app, please uncheck the "Virtual Reality Supported" box. The "Vuforia Augmented Reality Support" box below it is enough for a Vuforia AR app. Checking the VR Supported box will force the app into landscape mode to support a VR experience. It does not sound like you are working on this type of app.
