I am trying to determine a way to map a set of part storage bins, such as a rack of 4 bins per row and 3 rows high, so that I can programmatically augment a desired bin with an holographic image that can be seen when wearing an AR device, such as Microsoft's HoloLens. I am looking at doing the development in Unity, mapping with Vuforia and scripting/deployment in Visual Studio 2015 to Microsoft Hololens.
Most of the information I have read about image targets seem to require that the target be complex with high contrast and a lot of detail and non-repeating patterns, so trying to map the bins themselves doesn't seem like a viable approach.
I was thinking about putting a card above each bin. Each card would have a unique high contrast pattern. I could then make each card an image target and then, programmatically designate which of the image targets I wanted to augment with a hologram.
Are there better approaches to this use case?
Should each card need to be a unique VuMark or would just a unique complex high contrast image work just as well?
