Problems with installation of Vuforia 8 for Unity

January 30, 2019 - 10:37am #15

Hi,

I have problems with upgrading to the newest Vuforia plugin for Unity in Windows 10. If I install the Vuforia plugin using the Unity installer, an older, 7.x version gets installed. That works all right, however, the Asset Store samples (in particular the Vuforia Hololens sample project) require Vuforia 8. However, once I install the latest version (8.0.10), Unity will no longer recognize that Vuforia is installed. There is no "Vuforia" submenu under "GameObject" or "Help", and the Vuforia namespace is not visible either.

After some research I found out that the Vuforia plugin gets installed to /Path_To_Editor/Editor_Version/Editor/Data/PlaybackEngines/VuforiaSupport/. I could verify that the version 8.0 installer works, because that directory gets completely replaced during installation. Replacing that directory with the previous version (7.x), after restarting Unity, Vuforia gets detected again (albeit as expected, as version 7.x). For some reason the contents from the 8.0 version won't be detected.

I have the same problem with Unity 2018.2.14 and 2018.3.3. Any ideas what's happening here?

Thank you!

Problems with installation of Vuforia 8 for Unity

Hello,

The version of Vuforia in a given version of the Unity Editor is static. For example, Unity Editor 2018.3.3 is released with Vuforia 7.2. If Vuforia updates the SDK to 7.5, the version of Vuforia in the Unity Editor 2018.3.3 is not updated to 7.5.

To upgrade the version of Vuforia embedded in the Unity Editor, please follow these steps:

  1. Open the Unity Editor
  2. Select Window->Vuforia Configuration
    • If there is an error message about Vuforia not being enabled, please follow the instructions and restart this process
  3. If your version of Unity is eligible for a Vuforia update, you'll see a message and link to download the installer
  4. Download and extract installer executable from downloaded ZIP file
  5. Quit Unity Editor
  6. Run the installer executable
    • For Windows, select the folder that corresponds to the installed version of the Unity Editor that is eligible for the Vuforia update. Ex: C:\Program Files\Unity_2018.1.4f1
    • For Mac, select the drive
      • If the Unity installation you're upgrading
        • IS NOT in /Applications/Unity/, select "Customize" and change the Location to the desired folder
        • IS in /Applications/Unity/, select "Install" to complete the installation
  7. Restart the same version of the Unity Editor in Step #1
  8. Verify the update in the Unity Editor via Window->Vuforia Configuration

If you have any previously installed Vuforia samples, you'll also want to download the updated versions of those from the Asset Store.

Thanks,

Thank you so much for your answer!

I followed your instructions step by step (which is, exactly how I used to do it previously), and the problem unfortunately still persists. Let me break down the steps I did:

- Installed Unity with the Vuforia plugin included in the Unity installer. With Unity 2018.2.14f1 it's Vuforia 7.5.20.

- Verified that Vuforia is installed by loading a project that uses Vuforia. Built and tested an application, it works.

- Opened Window/Vuforia Configuration.

- Under Global I got the following message: "A new version of Vuforia is available: 8.0.10 [...]"

- I clicked the link titled "Download Vuforia 8.0.10." and downloaded the installer. ("VuforiaSupportInstaller-Windows-8-0-10.zip", it contains "UnitySetup-Vuforia-AR-Support-for-Editor-2018.2-2018.3.exe")

- Ran the installer and selected the correct path to the Unity editor.

- The installer finished without any problems. (The contents of the previously mentioned "[...]/PlaybackEngines/VuforiaSupport/" folder got updated.)

- Ran Unity again: Vuforia installation is not recognized: no Vuforia submenus are found (i.e. no Window/Vuforia Configuration, etc), the previously working project won't compile/build/run, missing the Vuforia namespace.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hello,

Disappointing to hear that the error persists.

This sounds familiar to similar reports on Mac OS, which may be related to user permissions (an account with admin privileges has to install Vuforia for the update to be recognized). Suggest you use an admin account for installing.

Thanks,

Hello @lwarner,

This sounds like Vuforia Augmented Reality Support has not been enabled in your project: Unity Editor->File->Build Settings...->Player Settings...->XR Settings

This is not working for me. With Unity 2019.1.2f1 in a Mac , and trying to update to Vuforia 8.3.8.

My Unity location is inside the UnityHub folder and I'm changing it in the "Customize" menu correctly, but still getting the "The installation failed - the installer encountered an error that cause the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacture for assistance" error.

Hello @edetronik,

Do you observe any residual folders in the Unity Editor installation folder under "PlaybackEngines"? Specifically, one called "VuforiaSupportTemp"?

Hi,

for me there is only one way to fix this, I am on mac:

1:Close all Unity applications AND the hub.

2: move the Unity folder out of the UnityHub into the Applications folder

3: Rename the folder to "Unity" ( keep the original name, you'll need to revert)

4: Install Vuforia using all defaults ( customize DOESN'T WORK)

5: Upon successfull install of Vuforia, move the Unity Folder back into the hub and renamed it as it was befo

Bye,

 Jean
