Samsung S21+ AR Camera displaying blackscreen after the samsung software update

August 21, 2021 - 11:55pm #1

I made an AR app in Unity using Vuforia. When i run the app with my webcam or any other mobile devices everything works perfectly fine, but when I try to run it on my phone (Samsung S21+), everything loads but the AR camera is showing black screen. The problem only occurred on August 17, 2021 during the latest software update, it works on the Samsung S21+ before the said update. Hope someone knows how to fix it or it is just a vuforia issue that they need to fix themselves.

Hey Tobias,

The black screen you're seeing is related to ARCore slowly removing support for 32-bit apps on 64-bit devices. They stated that: "Support for 32-bit-only ARCore enabled apps on the remaining 64-bit devices may be removed without notice in an upcoming ARCore release." which seems to be the case with the Samsung S10 and Samsung S21+.

When you build your app you should make sure that you are building for 64-bit (ARM64). That is the solution for you and your users. You can find more information regarding this ARCore specific issue here.

I realise that my previous post wasn't very clear, so I hope this is more understandable! Let me know.

I had the same problem on a Samsung Galaxy S10, and manually installing Google_Play_Services_for_AR_1.26.0.apk solved it on that phone. But what's the solution for non-developer Android phones? Was this reported anywhere?

Hey all,

kkarta and I worked together to try to see if the issue persisted with the Core Samples. In the meantime our R&D found that the issue is related to different ARCore APK versions. It would be great if everyone, including luwessspelep07, who encounters the same issues as described below to download the latest ARCore APK (1.26) from their official Github and install it on device.

This fixed the issue for kkarta and other developers.

kkarta, I will privately send out an email with the core samples of v9.8.8 It would be great if you could build and test on device to see if the issues you're currently having still persist.

luwessspelep07, I will do the same with you if you can provide me with the Vuforia Engine version you're app is currently running on!

Thanks both!

luwessspelep07, are you running Vuforia Engine v9.8 or v10?

kkarta, is it possible that the ARCore or Google Play Services for AR were updated around the same time? We have seen similar issues with ARCore being updated.

Sorry for the late reply, the issue started right after the samsung's os update. There are no error messages or anything but reinstalling the app and opening it still asks me to allow the use of the phones camera but when the time comes for it to launch the camera it just shows a plain black screen. It works well before the update and it still works on other devices

Hi Patrick,

Yes the phone is Samsung Galaxy S21+ 5G (SM-G996B).

There was a samsung software update around the 17th of Aug, since then Vuforia AR Camera is showing black screen.

Previously it was running correctly in this phone no issue.

We are using:

Unity 2019.4.25

Vuforia 9.8.8

Thanks.

Hey there everyone,

Thanks for pointing out the current issues with the Samsung S21+.

luwessspelep07, did you start getting these issues after the Vuforia Engine v10.0.12 update or the Samsung OS update? Are there any error messages/codes that you can share with me?

kkarta, can you elaborate on the issues you're receiving? I want to understand if these are the same from luwessspelep07's issues.

Can you both confirm that you're using the Samsung Galaxy S21+ 5G (SM-G996B)?

Thank you so much!
