Setup to test Unity without webcam?

November 8, 2019 - 8:54pm #1

Ok.. this is a bit weird question: I've been toying around with vuforia for a short while, using mostly a combo of SparkoCam and my DSLR. I'm doing several tests right now on how to manage the basics of the scene, which comprises turning it on and off A LOT, which makes the mirror going up and down lot of times, which is something I don't want to do to my camera.

So, I'm looking for alternatives, ideas or whatevers on what to do to being able to setup a decent testing environment; the straightforward option is just getting an actual webcam, but AR is the only use I have for it, and can't really justify the expense for this development. I have a mobile phone and a tablet, and I've been looking around an app called "IP Webcam" or something like that, but I would like to know if there's other option around there I could take a look to (Specially if they are open source). I'm on Windows 7, btw.

Thanks!

Unity provides tools that allow you to test applications during the development process. These tools allow you to debug your application as if it was any other Unity application, as well as wirelessly pushing content to your device. Some of these tools only work with specific WMR devices, such as HoloLens.

Play in Editor (immersive devices)

When using an immersive Windows Mixed Reality device, you can test and iterate on your application directly in the Unity Editor. Make sure the Windows Mixed Reality Portal is open and the headset is active, then press the Play button in the Editor. Now your application runs within the Editor while also rendering to the headset.

Known limitations

There are a couple of limitations to consider when using Play in the Editor with Mixed Reality devices:

Keyboard, mouse, and spatial controllers work in the Editor, as long as they are recognized by Windows and Unity.

Non-Windows Mixed Reality input devices only work when the game window has focus, otherwise keyboard and mouse controls may not work correctly.

Hi,

As an alternative, you could use your android phone cam and turn it into an webcam. Usually the virtual android webcam was recognized by Unity and you could use it with Vuforia.

Thank you.
