Switch between Marker-based and markerless in realtime

I want to create an app that will work in one of two modes - marker-based if it finds the image, or marker-less, if it can't find the image for X seconds or the user manually taps a button.

I could use two separate scenes for this, one with Vuforia Image Target and one with Vuforia Ground Plane, but then I will need to code the UI and logic twice.

Is there a way to switch between marker-based and markerless in real time, so the markerless will become pseudo marker-based after I place the image on the ground plane? This way I just replace the ImageTarget object with an AR GameObject on the ground plane and all other items conserve their respective location as if the ImageTarget still exists.
