Vuforia Requires Gamma Color Space

June 4, 2018 - 9:51pm #15

Vuforia SDK Version:7.1.34

Unity:2018.1.0f2

Issue:My project was using linear space before, but after updating to Unity2018 and Vuforia7.1.34,the console shows an error message which requires me  to switch linear space to gamma space.Because of my pbr workflow,if I changed the color space to gamma, the performance would be worse.Any solutions for this? Thanks.

error message:"Vuforia requires Gamma color space in order to correctly render the video background image. Please change the 'Color Space' to 'Gamma' in the Player Settings".

Vuforia 7.1.34 in Unity 2018.1 currently requires Gamma color space due to an issue with Linear color space. We are addressing the issue and are hoping to have it resolved for a future patch or version of Vuforia. If you require using Linear color space you'll have to revert to a previous version of Vuforia. Apologies for the inconvenience.

Thanks,

Is there a patch for using linear color space yet

I noticed that the Vuforia 7.2 patch still doesn't fix the forced gamma space issue - linear color space is important for properly rendering crips things to make a unity project look comparable to an unreal project. Also, arguably the main reason to upgrade to Unity 2018 is because of the post processing and better rendering support.

Is Vuforia just going to be completely broken with Unity 2018's rendering engine?

Is this fix coming on the roadmap? When is this patch coming?

Is the Linear Render bug fixed yet? Is it on the roadmap?

Hello,

This is one of our highest priority issues to look at for our next commercial release.

Note that this is not a regression - Vuforia video background rendering never worked properly with linear color space in Unity. We found this recently and prevented building for that since it would lead to a washed out video background rendering.

Up to the very latest Unity version, gamma color space is still Unity's default setting.

Thanks,

Is there any timeline on the commercial release? We absolutely need this for a client project - or we will have to go with Unreal instead of Unity

Hello,

With Unity 2018.2, builds with player settings incompatible to Vuforia no longer fail. The errors are just logged to the console and the build succeeds.

So if you want to use linear color space, you can do that with this version.

The actual issue will still persist - the video background colors will appear washed out when rendered to the screen. You could work around that by implementing a shader that compensates for the different color space. The shader used for video background rendering can be set in the Vuforia Configuration in the Video Background section.

We plan to fix this in our next commercial release which is scheduled for Fall of this year.

Hello,

I am trying to run my project using Linear Color Space. I am running Unity 2018.2.2f1 and Vuforia v7.2.23. My builds still fail with the same error:

"Vuforia requires Gamma color space in order to correctly render the video background image. Please change the 'Color Space' to 'Gamma' in the Player Settings"

Is there a setting I am missing in order to force linear color space?

Hello @fba021,

Did you change the player settings as described? If so, did you still get this error?

Thanks,

Hello,

I'm not sure which Player Settings you are referring to. If I change my Color Space to 'Gamma,' my project will build, however setting Color Space to 'Linear' will fail.

Thanks.

Hello,

Apologies for the confusion and thanks for the notification. We are looking into the issue and hope to resolve it in our next commercial release (Fall 2018).

Thanks,

Hello,

I'm running Unity 2018.2.8f1 With vuforia 7.2.24 and I still get the error and the build fails. Why would you say that the issue is resolved when it most clearly is not? Is there a workaround for this "feature"?

EDIT

Apparently, just building the apk for Android will work. I kept on clicking build and run and that always fails due to color space being Gamma. Happy for a workaround but this is rather wonky behaviour, not to mention the fact that I need to manually copy and install the package on the phone.

Hello,

Vuforia Engine SDK 7.5 now supports Linear color space in Unity: https://library.vuforia.com/articles/Release_Notes/Vuforia-SDK-Release-Notes.html
