World Mapping in Vuforia on Unity?

July 30, 2018 - 8:19am #1

So far, we have been using Vuforia in combination with image / multi targets. Worked pretty well.

Now we want to get a step further and use the whole environment of a room for placing AR objects. I know that there's support for ground planes and mid-air objects in Vuforia now, but what about "real world mapping", i.e. placing content in a room and restoring the positions of these objects in a separate app session or on another device.

This is possible with the latest ARKit version, but does Vuforia support this, too? If not, is there a way of combining Vuforia with ARKit in a way that both frameworks can be used at the same time? Otherwise, we would have to switch to ARKit only.

BTW: I think Vuforia should really update their docs more often. I read through the whole SmartTerrain chapter and docs until I finally learned that this technology has been deprecated :-/

Hello,

Unfortunately, it is not possible to access ARKit APIs through Vuforia.

Thanks,

Thanks for replies and the link to the ARCore solution. The poster did it in two separate scenes, though. In my project, I would like to use ARKit and Vuforia in the same scene. And yes, this would mean that Vuforia and ARKit would have to share camera access.

I was wondering if there was a way to access the "lower level" ARKit APIs if Vuforia was using ARKit under the hood anyways (i.e. in Fusion mode). This would not only solve the problem that both worlds are already aligned, it would also allow us to use extended features that haven't been ported to ARKit yet.

In my concrete case, I would like to use World Mapping and Perstistance (ARKit) and MultiTarget tracking (Vuforia) in parallel.

Hello,

Looks like somebody was able to get Vuforia and ARCore running concurrently: https://developer.vuforia.com/forum/unity/can-we-use-arcore-unity-sdk-components-vuforia-72

Hello,

This *might* be possible but I'm unaware of anyone else who has done this.

I believe that at a minimum this would require managing camera access between Vuforia and ARKit - they cannot access the camera device at the same time. Additionally, I would have concerns about memory usage.

Thanks,

Hi Medabit,

thanks for the quick response.

Is there a way to use the ARKit 2.0 beta package and Vuforia *in parallel*, so I could leverage the feature of both frameworks at the same time?

Hello,

Apologies for the Smart Terrain article. I've opened a ticket to have this feature's documentation removed.

Currently, Vuforia 7.2 does not support ARKit's AR World Sharing and Persistence feature. I also do not have a product roadmap at this time for Vuforia Fusion's support of ARKit features.

Thanks,
