Detecting just one rotation DOF

Hey guys,

im working on a student project and i have a problem:

i want to use a vuforia target to move and rotate an ingame object, that is not directly connected as a imagetarget object.

I already found a way to "translate" the position. Furthermore I need one rotation dimension (around the depth axis), but when i try to use the rotation values of the target, i get jumping values and no smooth changes. 

Is there a way to break the three-dimensional rotation values of my tracked target to a one-dimension rotation?
