Is Vuforia 4.0 breaking Unity UI logic?

I have been trying for some time now to block taps on and UI object propagating to the underlying scene without success and to this end followed the last recommended sample on the link below whcih works on the desktop, but no when using Vuforia.

As I can get this to work fine on a desktop but not on iPad with Vuforia is it a case that a glitche exists?

Really annoying as when I present a menu and the user taps a button if that button is over a game object in my scene the tap passes through the UI button and fires the code attached to the game object?

looks like a general Unity 4.6+ issue (see also suggested solution in the thread above)
