Vuforia and React Native

April 6, 2018 - 1:01pm #1

Does anyone have any experience with implementing a Vuforia project into a React Native app? We use Unity and Vuforia and would like to have the possibility to show AR in a application created with React Native. The basic idea is to have a button that opens the camera and if you hover the camera over a printed image of a map it's displayed in 3D. The React Native app is ejected so it's possible to write native code. I've searched through all the corners of the internet, trying to find a good solution, but no luck yet. Hope someone here can help me!

I just stumbled across react-native-unity-view, there are people playing around with Vuforia and it seems to work (in most cases).

You could probably edit the exported XCode Project (iOS) or Android Studio Project (Android) and include Vuforia manually (iOS / Android), build a native bridge (iOS / Android) to React Native and communicate through it.

Otherwise look for services providing a React Native SDK with Augmentation Support (paid).

They even seem to use Vuforia `under the hood`

To my knowledge there are no free solution at the moment. Please correct me if i'm wrong.

I'm currently playing around with Wikitude. iOS performance seems to be (at least in terms of image targets), comparable to Vuforia (there is not a big difference to me). Android performance is much better on Vuforia (compared to Wikitude). Wikitude has a JavaScript SDK. You can find a unofficial React Native bridge on GitHub. I managed to get a prototype working but now running into other issues. Not sure if this is worth investing more time.

Another approach could be ViroReact, my prototype worked out of the box but i has huge problems with tracking image targets. Image target detections works good on iOS and Android. Image target tracking works, let's say OK-ish on iOS but is unusable on Andorid.

I guess a Vuforia / ReactNative bridge in the same way the Wikitude bridge is structured should be a doable task. Keep in mind that you will probably run into the same issues i'm running with the Wikitude bridge at the moment (poor / no communication between those two worlds).
