Where can I find the sample Vumark-instances?

May 16, 2017 - 2:24am #1

Hey there,

I am currently trying to set up the Vuforia sample app on the Hololens but fail to do so. I have tried it by uploading the MortonTuxedos.svg as provided by the Vumark Designer Example to my own database and adding this database to the sample scene. That has not worked, though. Now I am trying to find out if the problem is on the hololens or on the Vumark side. For this I would like to use the sample app as I am supposed to. I would need the Vuforia Instance samples  that got mentioned in a few other, slightly older threads . I can't seem to find them in the core samples folder though. Could it be that they've been thrown out in a newer version? Or am I searching in the wrong places?

Hi Medabit -  I am back on that project, so let's see if I can get this to work.

I finally got the sample to work, thanks a lot :)

So now I am wondering: The recognition seems to be kinda unstable and only works on certain distances, around ~20-30 cm away from my head. Does the y-axis from the vumark change where it is recognized best? E.g. for 1 in y that it is recognized best with 1m distance? While it is certainly cool that the Hololens is able to recognize Vumarks now it seems to be too unpractical atm.

Hello @DieboldNixdorf2017,

Admittedly, the prepackaged VuMark instances are a bit hard to difficult to locate in the Unity core samples: https://developer.vuforia.com/downloads/samples

The zip file downloaded from the portal has two Unity packages. I just did a fresh install of VuforiaSamples-6-2-10.unitypackage and found them here: Assets/Editor/Vuforia/ForPrint/Vuforia-VuMark-Instances-00-99.zip

thanks for your continued support. Does "It uses Vumark instances that are distributed with our sample app" mean that there are indeed sample instances? Or am I misunderstanding something? Because I am trying to find these sample instances to see if they do work.

Ok I've found the sample instances in the UWP sample download. It seems like they were not in the Unity sample, that is why I couldn't find them before. Gonna try it all again now.

Hello @augusty84,

A VuMark is just another type of an Object Target. All Object Targets return a 6DOF pose, so you can combine both the instance recognition aspects of a VuMark (i.e. decoding the bits) and a registered AR experience.

I convinced myself of this by creating a simple Unity project. In that project, I took a VuMark prefab as-is, associated a VuMark device database with it, a placed a simple 3D cube object on it. I then printed out a VuMark instance (via the Target Manager) and deployed the app to a device. When running the app, the VuMark is tracked just like an image target but is not decoded.

Here's a simple VuMark HoloLens Unity project that I created for someone else to bootstrap them:

It uses VuMark instances that are distributed with our sample app. Perhaps you can use it to compare settings?

Good luck!

Hololens still doesn't recognize a thing, it's frustrating :( Wanna bet its a small thing I am overlooking?

@augusty84 Vumarks can generate an AR experience indirectly. You can get their IDs and with these IDs you can do different things. You have to code them though.

I've planned to get the positions of my objects from Vumarks. I have to recognize them first though.

Hi - isn't this the same thing that I encountered? VuMarks are not interactive as they can only display the digital code as a string or number.  Their original intent is to transfer data.  You would think that they would generate an AR or Mixed Reality experience but they do not.  And if I am wrong please tell me because the VuMark will change the world when it can generate an AR experience.

Thanks for the detailed response. You didn't mention how you generated the VuMark instances, but I will assume that you used the Target Manager and printed them to the correct size and scale.

Did you follow these steps, as well?

Thanks for the answer. I got that far already, though.

I got a licence key for the Vumark-App, made a Vumark Database (with the Morton Vumark Design) and added it to the licence, Added licence key and database to the Vumark sample scene, Changed the database in the Vumark Object to my own database and changed it to optical recognition, Added a Hololenscamera to attach the ARcamera to, activated the database and windows holographic in settings and then build the app with the right settings for Hololens as recommended by Unity.

Yet the Hololens does not recognize anything, neither on the pc screen nor on the printed paper. Is there any step I might've missed out?

I don't believe we packaged instances of the Morton's VuMark with the sample app or VuMark Design Tool. However, as you've already successfully uploaded the SVG to the Target Manager, you can now create your own VuMark instances via the Target Manager:

I recommend creating PDF instances for testing as these are the most portable. When printing, be sure to retain the original aspect ratio as this can negatively affect detection performance.
