Model Targets with Metascan

The Metascan 3D capture app for iOS devices lets you scan and obtain 3D models of objects that can be used to create Model Targets.

Metascan has two modes for capturing objects. The Photo Scan can be used on many iOS devices and will reconstruct an object based only on the images. If you have an iOS device with LiDAR, you can use the LiDAR Scan to reconstruct a 3D model with accurate scale, provided that the object is not very small.

Requirements

An iOS device with a LiDAR scanner is required if you wish to use the LiDAR Scan mode. Other iOS devices are supported from 2015 and newer.

Installation

Get the Metascan from the App Store.

Scanning Guide

The Metascan app lets you capture and process and object with the LiDAR Scan mode on location without the need of internet access. Photo Scan requires an internet connection to upload the images as the photogrammetry process takes place on their servers.

Post-Processing

The Metascan app offers a set of inbuilt tools and controls to edit the mesh such as a crop tool. If you are using the Photo Scan, it will be necessary to inspect the 3D model for correct scale in a mesh editor.

TIP: The app has a measuring tool that is useful for inspecting the scale.

The 3D model can be exported in different file formats. See their FAQ for details. Note, that after preparing the 3D model, the file format should be saved as one that the Model Target Generator supports.

Model Preparation

Use your preferred mesh editor or 3D modeling software to inspect and correct your reconstructed 3D model.

Inspect the 3D model for accurate scale, recommended number of vertices, accurate colors, and if the texture does not have hard shadows. Adjust according to our best practices for Model Targets.
