Hi - is Unity Pro or the Android addon required to use the extension
Unity Android is available and works fine. Once you add it to your Unity license you will be able to select "Android" as the build platform under File/Build Settings. Then you can publish an .APK that you can deploy to your device.
Good to know that the Unity Android trial will be available before the contest deadline!
Just to be certain, as long as we are within the trial period, would we be able to package/publish our app for the Qualcomm AR contest? If so, are there any trial limitations we should be aware of?
In terms of the competition this is fine, you can submit an app created with a trial version of Unity Android. I don't know of any limitations, other than a small watermark, which will not affect judging. Just be sure to package up your apk file while your trial license is active!

I'm confused by the licensing requirements for publishing AR apps for Android. I've been trialling with Unity Free, but now want to be able to add custom splash screens and use some of the other features not available in the free version.
If you want to be sure to get the most correct and up-to-date information on what the Unity licenses (Free/Pro/Android) allow you to do, I'd recommend to check in the Unity website directly.
This is what I did initially, but the license comparisons are hard to understand. For example, if I compare Unity free with Unity Pro, it tells me that the Pro version has custome screens, streaming video etc. etc. which is fine.

AFAIK, today you can get the Basic Android support with the Unity Free license;
