3D Print .obj files convert to .od?

April 2, 2016 - 8:00am #1

Hello Vuforia fans,

I'm new to augmented reality, but with good tutorials and tips I have worked it out, to build my own AR app.

My problem is now, that I have a 3D printed city map. In this map I have to track all buildings for its own to give them AR informations. But how can I do this?

I have now evaluate 3 methods for that:

  1. Tracking with a lot of small Frame Markers. Because the 3D print is realy small. Maybe 15x10cm.
  2. Image Targets or a cuboid. But this really elaborate.
  3. Object Scan

It thems the best way to do this is the the Object Scan, because then I haven't any physical markers on the model. BUT, how to scan only one building on the map and don't scan others on the map?

For the 3D Ppint I have .obj files. Can I take them for the object target? Can I convert them to a .od file?

Thanking you in anticipation!

Kind regards,

3D Print .obj files convert to .od?

Hi there,

My aim is to covert a 3D model (ie fix) into a .od file I downloaded Model Target Generator version 7.5.20 on windows and you can only see the 3d object in CAD Model View or Detection View. In this program I can only detect the 3d object and create a target by creating my target it creates a folder path with 2 png images of my 3d model and two different extensions myModel.vul and myModel.vup. Apart from this it creates 4 folders

1).converted which has a .pvz file.

2) .published which as myModel.bin and myModel.tgif.

3) .shadow again published which as myModel.bin and myModel.tgif.

4) dataset which has 2 png images, a .dat file, myModel.unitypackage and myModel.xml

I understand the use of .dat and xml for vuforia and why they create a unity package but there is not output of my 3d model to .od file?

Even importing the unity package it's a .jpg of my model and a .xml it doesn't convert it to a .od or object data file i understand this is native to the scanner app but how else can i make this 3d model compatible with vuforia and upload it to the target manager?

Any help would be really appreciated as I have tired 2 ways to do this now?

Can you just treat the entire 3d city as one object though? After you scan it, you can try to align the specific building (assuming within Unity3D) via the World positions.

To be clear with what i want to achieve is the video linked below

What is see from the video is he is tracking the object or recognizing the objects using the AR algorithm and placing the content.

I tried using Vuforia image target tracking  by taking the picture of the realtime object i wanna place in real scale and placing it but not was not able to crack it. It is not detecting at all. So i went through your documentation and tutorials object recognition is mentioned but no tutorial is given on that in Unity.

Please help me out. Also can i try and check and then later buy the subscription atleast for once. It would be of great help if you could respond faster.

Well, so, how can I add an 3d object that is built with a 3D building tool.

Vuforia does not allow to build 3D model, does it?

Is there any way i can convert .obj file formats to .od? And also is there a different AR platform that will enable me to give a desired 3D model as image target instead of giving 2D images?

Object Target scan resultant files (i.e. .od files) are proprietary to the Vuforia SDK. There are no tools to convert other file formats to .od, or vice-versa.

I'm wondering about this too. I don't need to track anything, but am trying to figure out how to use 123d catch to create some of the content for what I'm doing with Vuforia and I know 123d catch makes .OBJ files not .OD files. Hope to get some help, thanks!
